In Matthew 18:1, the disciples beg Jesus to tell them who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (I think they were hoping it was one of them.) No such luck. Jesus says little children are the greatest, and points out that they need to become like that.
Hardly a minute later, Mrs. Zebedee asked Jesus to put her two boys first. (I suspect the boys put her up to it.) Of course, this riled up the other disciples.
Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.” When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. (From Matthew 20:20-24, NIV)
Do you see what a mess Momma caused? Her boys already knew who was the greatest in heaven. It wasn’t them, but she still stuck her nose in, trying to get them what they wanted.
Parents are you trying to determine your adult child’s lot in life? Get out of the way, pray and let them find their own way to Jesus.
Prayer – Father, remind us to leave well enough alone and instead cover our children with prayer. Amen
