It’s a return of the fullest nature. Men desecrated the buffalo from about 45 million to near extinction in the 1800’s, hoping also to do the same to the natives who depended on them for food, shelter, and spiritual connection to the land.
You can find more information on the Tearfund Canada site. Missionaries from another country pointed out the necessity and Tear Fund chimed in.
The goal is to return buffalo and thus also culture and identity to indigenous communities. A starter herd of about twenty buffalo is gifted to a community and as they multiply, that community gives another twenty or so to another community.
Said one leader, “It brings this sense of calmness and peacefulness to our spirits to know that buffalo have returned to our reserves.”
Government and church have left hurt, abuse and mismanagement as their legacy to the natives. The buffalo are one way to reach out in peace.

We know that when these bodies of ours are taken down like tents and folded away, they will be replaced by resurrection bodies in heaven—God-made, not handmade—and we’ll never have to relocate our “tents” again. Sometimes we can hardly wait to move—and so we cry out in frustration. Compared to what’s coming, living conditions around here seem like a stopover in an unfurnished shack, and we’re tired of it! We’ve been given a glimpse of the real thing, our true home, our resurrection bodies! The Spirit of God whets our appetite by giving us a taste of what’s ahead. He puts a little of heaven in our hearts so that we’ll never settle for less. (2 Corinthians 5:1-10)
