Remembering our nation’s roots in God and Christianity
Without getting into the debate about whether America is or should be a Christian nation, we should all take time on this Independence Day to recognize our nation’s roots in Christianity. For those of us who believe in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20), we should want all men and women and all nations—including this nation—to know our Savior Jesus Christ.
Remembering America’s heritage as a Christian nation is the theme of today’s advertisement by arts and crafts retailer Hobby Lobby. In a full-page ad appearing in several markets throughout the country, readers are given several historical quotes from our nation’s founders and past leaders that show the role God, the Bible and Christianity have played in shaping this nation’s values, government and educational system.
Here are a few excerpts:
“The Bible is the best of all books, for it is the word of God and teaches us the way to be happy in this world and the next. Continue therefore to read it and to regulate your life by its precepts.”—John Jay, first chief justice of the Supreme Court
“The Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other.”—Alexis De Tocqueville, author of “Democracy in America”
There are many other inspirational quotes in the Hobby Lobby ad to reflect upon this Independence Day. As we celebrate freedom, let’s now forget how our nation’s values and liberties were shaped.
