I watched the glittering reflected light of my engagement ring flicker around the wall. Every time I moved my hand, there it was. Closer examination revealed that it was not my ring at all, but my quite inexpensive watch. Humph. So all that glitters is not so valuable after all.
The world creeps its glittering way into our hearts every day. Oh it approaches slowly, almost imperceptibly but it constantly affects our actions, behaviours and even our opinions. Of course we like to think that we are above this sort of brain washing but we are not.
Every thought that comes into our head translates into emotions and our emotions often determine our actions. Think before every thought you hear and run every thought through this filter.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8, NIV)
