Mark 12:41-44–He was observing how the crowd tossed money in for the collection. Many of the rich were making large contributions. One poor widow came up and put in two small coins—a measly two cents. Jesus called his disciples over and said, “The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together. All the others gave what they’ll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford. She gave her all.” (MSG)
She was full of thoughts and prayers for friends, family, community, and even the world, but then she stubbed her toe on the dresser. She yearned to give food to the hungry at the food bank, donate some clothing to the Salvation Army, but then she went to the mall. She dreamed of tithing and giving beyond her wildest dreams. She wanted to give to pay off the church mortgage, but then her rent came due.
Too often ‘she’is us. The Christmas season is long over. The boxes have all been opened and only memories remain. Will our seasonal goodwill become just a memory? Or will it continue all year?
The world says, “Take care of you first!”
God says, “Pray for widows, orphans and government leaders. Give to the poor. Bring me your tithes and offerings.”
Whose word do we trust, and act upon?
Prayer: Father God, help us expand our giving throughout the year, both spiritually and physically, just because you said so. Amen.
