The New York City Landmarks Commission this morning unanimously denied landmark status to a building where a Muslim group plans to build an Islamic center and mosque two blocks from Ground Zero.
As the Wall Street Journal points out, the commission members are appointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has been a staunch defender of the center saying it promotes religious tolerance and pluralism.
Opponents have decried it as a slap in the face to the city and victims’ families.
